The first building for Meadowlark Senior Center in Rio Rancho was built in the 1980’s but has had numerous additions. These additions resulted in confusing and dangerous access to the facility. In 2014, GDDA created an entirely new site plan that alleviated hazardous conditions for elderly users by opening up the front entry in the form of a new semi-public plaza that is safe from vehicular traffic. By working closely with the civil engineer, we were able to slightly raise the entire site so that there is no raised curb or other impediment to walking or rolling directly to the front door, yet we were able to protect the users from runaway cars. In addition, we constructed spaces that enhance the experience of the nearby residents and passersby. We created outdoor areas of respite for the seniors so they can read, chat or hold classes under a new system of origamilike shade structures. There is a new rose garden at the entry to take advantage of the collective gardening skills of the center’s users. The entire site was re-graded and landscaped, with special attention given to the portion along the roadway in order to create a more inviting public appearance.
